We'll first discuss Loomis' approach, which is more complex, but more accurate. If you find that this approach is a bit difficult for you, you can skip to the simpler approach further down the page. Remember, either way, the goal is to create a convincing drawing of a face so either approach you take is fine.

Mar 03, 2017 How to Draw a Female Face Step 1: Face Shape Draw a circle and make a small horizontal line at the bottom for the chin. It’s position should be roughly half of the circle’s diameter vertically. This matters because the circle was drawn freehandedly, so the horizontal diameter could be different.
Step 1 - Draw a Circle and a Cross
We'll first draw a circle with two intersecting lines that connect directly in the center. The circle represents the top portion of the head. We'll use the intersecting lines to determine the locations of the facial features.
Step 2 - Draw a Square within the Circle
Next, we'll draw a square in which each corner touches the circle. This square will eventually represent the edges of the face. The top line will eventually become the bottom hairline. The bottom line will become the nose line, while the center line will become the brow line.
Step 3 - Draw the Chin
Now we'll measure the distance from the center line to the bottom line. You can use your pencil to do this. From the bottom line of the square, use this measurement to mark the location of the bottom of the chin. Then, draw the edges of the chin from each side of the square so that they connect at your marked location.
Step 4 - Locate the Eyes
Now we have the basic structure of the shape of the face in place. We'll next locate the eyes. We can use the height of the head to help us determine the location of the eyes on the face. The eyes are generally found on a line in the center of the head.
The brow line is represented by the center line that we drew in step one. So we know that the eyes should be found just below this line, in the center of the head. We can draw a line here for the 'eye line'.
Step 5 - Draw the Eyes
Now that we know where our eyes are located on the face, we can draw them. There's another measurement to keep in mind. We also should consider the width of the eyes. The width of the head, from ear to ear, generally measures the same length of five 'eyes'. This means that if we want to draw the eyes with accurate proportions, then we need to draw them so that they match this approximate measurement.
In this lesson, we're focusing only on drawing the face but if you want more instruction on drawing eyes, take a look at these lessons..
Step 6 - Locate and Draw the Nose
Moving down the face, we'll next draw the nose. The bottom of the nose can be found on the bottom line of the square that we drew in step two. The width of the nose varies from person to person, but is generally as wide as the inside corners of the eyes.
It may be helpful to draw two light lines down from the inside corners of the eyes to help you find the width of the nose.

Step 7 - Locate and Draw the Mouth
We find the mouth slightly higher than half-way between the bottom of the nose and the chin. Of course, this measurement varies from person to person. We can draw a line to mark the positioning of the mouth.
We can use the eyes to help us determine the width of the mouth. The corners of the mouth generally align with the inside edges of the pupils. It may be helpful to draw light lines from the pupils to the 'mouth line'.

Step 8 - Draw the Ears
Next, we'll draw the ears. Here again, we can use the locations of the features of the face to help us determine the location of the ears. The top of the ears will generally align with the brow line, while the bottom of the ears align with the nose line.
Keep in mind that the ears come out of the head and extend upward slightly. This means that the ears will extend outward from the head, near the eye line.
We've only sketched in a couple of loose ears for this lesson. If you want to take a closer look at drawing an ear, check out this lesson..
Step 9 - Draw the Hairline
Now we'll draw the hairline. If you're drawing someone that has long hair that overlaps the forehead, the hairline may not be visible, but it's still important to know where it's located. The hairline is found on the top edge of the square that we drew in step two.
Hairlines vary greatly from person to person. In this example, we'll draw a widow's peak pattern.
Step 10 - Draw the Hair
Now that we have the hairline in place, we can draw the hair. Shorter hair extends only slightly off of the top of the head, while longer or bushier hair may extend quite a bit. In both cases, however, the hair extends out from the head and should not be drawn directly on the head.

Step 11 - Add the Neck
Now we need to add a neck to our floating head. The tendency of most beginning artists is to make the neck too narrow. Generally speaking, the neck extends down from the bottom of the ears. Female necks are slightly more slender, while the necks of males are broader.
To draw the neck, we'll simply extend two lines down from the bottom of the ears.
This tutorial explains how to draw and proportion a female face with detailed explanations and illustrated examples for each step that can be applied to whatever medium you choose to draw in.
If you are going to draw with pencil and paper be sure to make light strokes for the initial steps of the tutorial so that you can then easily erase the guide lines.
Defining Features of a Female Face
Though facial features can vary greatly from person to person females tend to have smoother less pronounced facial features, rounder faces and smaller chins when compared to a male face.
Face Proportions
In the above example you can see the general position of various facial features. Please note that this is only a guideline as facial features and their positioning can vary from face to face.
With that said this guide can still help you avoid making major mistakes when proportioning a face.
How to Draw a Face
- Draw the entire shape of the head first.
- Create a rough sketch of all of the facial features and do your best to insure they are correctly placed before drawing the smaller details.
- Keep different parts of you drawing in roughly the same state of completion.
Step 1 – Drawing the Female Head
To help you make sure that both sides of the head will be of equal width and that the facial features in later steps will be evenly spaced start your drawing by first making a vertical line through the middle of your drawing area. Next draw a circle for the top part of the head and from that project two lines that first go to the jaw area and then curve inwards and go down again at a sharper angle to finally form the curve of the chin.
As this is a female face for the sake of this tutorial we will make the chin fairly small and narrow.
Step 2 – Refine the Shape of the Head
For this step you can slightly adjust the shape of the top of the head as it will usually not be a perfect half circle. You can also add a hint of the cheek bones.
After you are done with those you can go ahead and erase the circle guideline but leave the middle line.
Step 3 – Proportioning the Face
To create guidelines for the first set of facial features divide the face into four parts using horizontal lines. You will want to draw the lines from the hairline area of the head (located slightly below the top of the head) down towards the chin in a way where you will have three evenly spaced section of the face plus the smaller hairline portion for a total of four.
Step 4 – Placing the Eyebrows
Sketch the eyebrows directly below the second line from the top of the head (the one after the hairline line). Adding lastpass to chrome.
Step 5 – Placing the Nose
Draw the nose starting near the inner tips of the eyebrows. For the initial sketch simplify the nose into flat planes for the front, sides and bottom.
The nose will narrow towards the bridge and widen from there towards the bottom of the face.
Please note that the nose is one facial feature that can differ greatly from person to person. An average nose like the one in this tutorial will generally go slightly past the middle portions of the three even divisions. Longer noses can go farther down.
Step 6 – Placing the Ears
Draw the outline of the ears inside the middle portion of the three evenly spaced divisions touching the second and third line from the top.
For more on drawing ears also see:
Step 7 – Placing the Eyes
Draw another horizontal line directly through the middle of the head (you can remove the other horizontal lines at this point) and on it draw the shape of the eyes (just the outline). Place the eyes far enough apart that you can fit another eye in between them. The space on the sides of the eyes should be slightly less than the width of one eye.
Step 8 – Placing the Mouth

![Drawing Drawing](/uploads/1/3/7/3/137380385/304159748.jpg)
Position the mouth by first drawing a horizontal line between the bottom of the nose and the bottom of the chin. This line will represent the bottom of the bottom lip. Going up from there draw a horizontal line for the mouth and another one above that for the top of the top lip. The bottom lip tends to be bigger than the top so proportion your drawing accordingly.

Drawing Female Eyes
Inside the shape of the eyes sketched out in previous steps draw the circles of the irises with the top part slightly covered by the eyelids and the bottom just touching the bottom eyelid.
Please note that bigger wider open eyes can make for a more younger and feminine look.

Drawing a Female Nose
A line drawing of a female nose can be a little tricky as the more you define it’s shape the less feminine the nose may appear.
Based on the earlier proportions sketch draw some lines to indicate the nostrils and sides of the nose. Afterwards draw a hint of the tip and the bridge.

The bottom lip tends to actually be two evenly split curves that join at the bottom of the mouth to form one bigger curve.

Female Ears Drawing
As the ears will be covered by the hair we will not go into drawing their inner shape in this tutorial.
For drawing ears you can see:
Eyebrows
As we are simply doing an outline drawing of the eyebrows in this tutorial drawing them should be fairly simple. For a more feminine look simply try and make the eyebrows relatively thin.
Step 10 – Drawing the Outline of the Hair
Girl Face Drawings
How you draw the hair will differ based on the hairstyle. For this particular example the hair will basically be split into two major shapes going from the parting line. As there is more hair flipped to the left side of the drawing that shape will be bigger than the shape on the right.
Step 11 – Drawing the Hair Details
To add detail to hair draw in some lines flowing from the parting line down along the shape of the hair. Add in some other lines that still follow the general direction of the hair in various places along the overall shape of the hair. Try and vary these in their length and distance from one another.
After you finish the hair the tutorial is pretty much but if you want to add some eyelashes you can follow the step below.
For more on drawing female hair see:

Step 12 – Drawing the Eyelashes
Draw the individual hairs of the eyelashes with slightly different distance between each of them but at the same time try and make the overall distribution fairly even. Eyelashes tend to grow more towards the outer half of the eyes (away from the middle of the way). The hairs of the eyelashes sort of fan out as the follow the curved shape of the eyelids. The eyelashes themselves are also curved but this will be less obvious for the eyelashes that are pointing directly at the viewer.
Woman Face Drawing Step By Step
Conclusion
It takes a lot of work to properly draw a face. Because of their less pronounced facial features female faces can be particularly difficult as there are fewer well defined lines to be able to show the shape of the face with. If you find yourself struggling don’t get discouraged. If you practice on a regular basis and drawing in the correct way you can significantly improve your skill as an artist.
